the coop

Long before the chickens, there were coop sketches.

Lots and lots of coop sketches,

all over the kitchen table, the floor... many many sketches.

I wanted to design a coop that would look nice in the backyard. It needed to be safe and spacious, easy to clean, something that wouldn't cost a fortune.

I gleaned ideas from sites like Backyard Chickens, which has a huge photo gallery of coops.

The one below was the final plan:  safe, easy to clean, the right size for a few hens.

I built it in the garage, one side at a time, and assembled it outside in April.

ta-da!

  4. Hi Anonymous -- Oh, the pavers...I was going to place them all around the edges as deterrent for predators who might try to dig their way in.
But I ended up laying hardware cloth around the edges, about six inches wide....Easier and cheaper.

It's 2011 already and a year since this blog began... I'm rereading and catching up on episodes. :0)

One more cool thing to know about Lauren is that she was also a furniture maker at one point, and is now a fun, toy-home-kid-family-pet-DIY project designer and maker. It all started back in the mid 80s with a furniture class at MassArt.

    Her talents are endless!
